Why the San Diego Chargers Will Fuck Around and Win The Super Bowl

First off,

I would like to thank all who have been taking the time to read my blog.  It's really cool that there are a few folks out there who value my opinion in sports matters (because the guys at work always think I'm crazy...but never want to put money up.) So I really appreciate it.  Now, there is so much going on in the NFL and football period right now that I simply could not focus on one topic. So I reached out to readers for topic ideas and got a few good ones. Since two of the topics were draft related I decided I could give those a little bit more time and research. As the draft pool expands and NFL teams start talking trades, I can make better predictions on what's going to happen, and an in depth analysis of what NEEDS to happen.  So, I am going to talk about a team that I am starting to like a lot, the San Diego Chargers. Don't get it twisted I am a FALCONS fan for life; but as a fan of FOOTBALL, I have teams and players I like because of their style, talent, QB, etc.

My reader Jessa (gotta love girls who love football) sent me an article by Charles Gille which suggests that the Chargers will win the super bowl; not because of their clock dominating offense, or the QB Phillip Rivers championship spirit and boldness, or because they have been on a winning streak that started with the Broncos, but because they played the Philadelphia Eagles in the Eagle's home opener. For the past four years straight every team that has played the Eagles, in the Eagles' home opener has gone on to win the super bowl. That's a strong statistic. Don't believe it? Google it. At the end of the article (which was written back in September) it also suggests, "Perhaps the only thing that could boost the certainty of a Chargers Super Bowl would be a loss to the Washington Redskins. The ‘Skins have defeated the last three Super Bowl champs in the regular season." The Chargers lost to the Redskins in over time back in November. I think I like these odds.

However, the Chargers winning the Super Bowl is not a crazy idea to me.  I have the Chargers over the Broncos on Sunday, and have been saying (ever since I saw his post game interview after his win over the Broncos) that Phillip Rivers is a good quarter back and has a Champion spirit that is driving this team to success. After every game since his winning streak he has been TOO TURNT UP, and most importantly, PASSIONATE. That man firmly believes he is going to win the Super Bowl, and after every game, he sounds like he has just won the super bowl. That attitude and spirit can get you very far in life. He is a country, heart filled guy from Decatur (no not in the ATL but in Alabama). That I don't give a fuck I will "get er' done!" mind set is what creates champions.  But River's isn't the only one who is amped. The entire team is. Since the beginning of the season key players on the Chargers' roster have been quoted as saying that they would win the Super Bowl.  Anyone who knows me would know that I tend to pick teams and players based on character and passion, and this team has a lot of both. Watch out.

That being said I know there are people who are going to want to talk numbers and statistics.  So I will give you an over view of why numbers wise; the Chargers could win the Super Bowl. The Charger's are number one in the NFL for time of possession of the football. This is an ideal situation for the Chargers. They have been implementing a formula, and it works. You can't score points if you don't have the football. So as a result when you do get the football you absolutely MUST make a play and try to score, because if you don't, you might not touch the ball for another damn 20 minutes. That's a lot of pressure and a lot of QBs can't handle that (golden boy Peyton being one of them). Not only does it suck that you have to score every time you touch the football, but you have to score against a decent Charger's defense that has been chillin'...mad hard, so they are sharp and ready.  In contrast, if your defense is constantly on the field, they get tired and worn out.  That makes it easier for Rivers to make key plays and score. Rivers has about a 70% completion rating which is pretty high. However, he has fewer pass attempts than many elite quarterbacks. Why is this? Because Phillip Rivers has a running back who is FUCKING AWESOME even though most would call him average. Ryan Matthews is not a name you hear on ESPN all the time because he does not score many touch downs (6 for the regular season) and he only averages about 4 yards a carry. The great thing about him though is he is CONSISTENT.  Four yards a carry may not sound like much, but that's 12 yards every 3 downs. And guess who has a 50% 3rd down conversion rating that is number 1 in the league? The Chargers. They run the ball to the end of the field and beat your defense down. By the time the Chargers are in the red zone your defense is over it and let's Rivers work his magic. This is a formula we have seen get a team to the super bowl before. Remember that one time back in 1999 when the Falcons went to the super bowl? (Yes we did go once believe it or not). Well anyway that all happened because of the coach Dan Reeves and a running back named Jamal Anderson. Reeves would have Anderson plow the ball down the field and Chris Chandler would only throw the ball when he had to (Chris was one of those "game manager" quarter backs aka a wet towel). Now in the Falcon's case they were even luckier than the Chargers because Anderson was actually REALLY GOOD and would often break away for TDs. But then again, the Chargers are actually the luckier one's because instead of a really good "party animal" running back and a lame QB, they have a dope QB who get's the job done and lifts his team up.

So that being said I had my Super Bowl predictions as Colts vs. 49ers. However, in light of all this information, I think its going to be a West Side show down between the Chargers and 49ers.  It's the playoffs baby. Anything can happen.

P.S. Laura those uniforms from Northwestern's basketball team ARE doing a lot. But I think it's really cool the players got to design the uniform that represents them since the school is making so much money off their backs anyway. Let's see how they do this season.

Top 5 Things We Learned From The Very Last BCS Title Game

1.     Famous Jameis lives up to the hype.

This game numbers wise was by far the worst game for Winston. However, it showcased what talents he possesses that makes truly GREAT quarter backs. He has heart, he has leadership, and he has a touch of swagger. Throughout this season ESPN has been busy highlighting the numbers that Jameis puts up. But I was watching his character. He stayed focused the entire season despite numerous trials and tribulations. He consistently said he was going to win and was only focused on a national championship. He came to play and he played to win.  His heart and will to win along with his SINCERE team based mindset is why he is going to be a future Hall of Fame QB. This man is diligent and almost brainwashed like a marine. Every interview “team this, team that,” “WE are going to win a national championship,” “This Heisman is for THE TEAM.” He never lost that mindset and that is what got him the perfect season and a national championship. He makes his teammates want to play great. This is an un-coachable, rare, amazing talent. This is why after trailing by 18 points half-time, and experiencing more troubles during the third quarter; he was able to rally the troops in Tom Brady like fashion, and do what needed to be done to win.

2.     The SEC ain’t nothing to fuck with.

With the BCS out and the new play off style bracket coming get ready for total domination. I still don’t fully understand the new system but what I do know is that strength of schedule is going to be taken into account now and these schools from other conferences are going to really need to step up to the plate. Auburn actually came out like their mascot today. TIGERS. I mean Got Damn! They came out with a tempo and speed that FSU defiantly wasn’t ready for. FSU quickly realized, “DAMN THEM BOYS FAST!” and “SHIT HE HIT ME HARD AS FUCK”. The SEC is seriously a mini NFL defensively. Offensively they make big plays too but not as often and as exciting as the other conferences (although I think that is going to start to change). However, what we all know is, “defense wins championships!”. So welcome to the South FSU, we will not make shit easy next year (not saying Florida isn’t in The South but you know…it’s FLORIDA…they different).

3.     Dreams really do come true.

What a fuckin storybook ending! It’s so perfect I don’t even think kids dream of shit like this because it’s THAT UNREAL. I think little boys might grow up dreaming about winning a Heisman trophy, or winning the national championship, maybe both. But I don’t think many kids are even comprehending having a perfect season, winning the Heisman, winning the national championship…and winning it ON YOUR BIRTHDAY! In a dramatic last minute, perfectly executed 2 minute drill for a touch down. Seriously, can you even IMAGINE the type of pussy he is about to get tonight ? (although if he is smart he may want to stay away from the White girls).  Jameis Winston is good for football. He is charismatic, a great leader, from a small town, and he is not hurt in the face like some other players. HE also has a GREAT nick name and a wonderful story. America is lost right now, shit is crazy, unemployment is whatever, governments are shutting down, etc. Football may not be American’s past time but it is America’s PASSION. Jameis Winston is the All-American sports hero, and Americans would really like to have something to believe in right now. There is a new generation of quarter backs emerging and if Jameis Winston keeps the same attitude and focus and continues to be touched by God, PR wise, we may have a future Michael Jordan of football on our hands. Remember I said it first. Most of his critics will say “we should wait and see how he handles the success and attention and tougher schedule with play offs and blah blah blah.” And they are right. But I just have a feeling “Famous Jameis” will not let us down.

4.     Gus Malzahn is a hell of a coach…and a damn good 2nd chance QB finder.

First it was Cam Newton now it’s Nick Marshall. Where the hell does he find these diamonds in the rough? It’s like he looks for football players in the pages of SEC schools’ local Bad and Busted. Then he keeps getting all these “miracle” wins. There is something to this coach. He clearly must have a gift to motivate and push young men to do their best and be proud of themselves. He takes RAW talent and molds them into great quarterbacks, Nick Marshall and Cam Newton both are tall and fast. They both also have secret weapons, THEIR ARMS.  Nick Marshall was throwing passes during the BCS title game with pro like speed and precision, that’s something I had not noticed in him before. Ironically, Marshall at UGA, played his defensive counter part, a defensive back, until he ran into some legal problems; just like Cam. He played at some small community college; just like Cam, and some how Gus found him and turned him into a star; just like Cam. There is a common denominator and it is the coach. This guy is genius. One of the biggest problems for Auburn is recruiting. It has to contend with Saban’s Alabama not to mention the rest of the SEC and now after Alabama Native Jameis Winston’s success FSU. So instead of trying to compete with those guys he goes to the bargain aisle and finds deals. Guys who were good, but were maybe in the wrong program, playing the wrong position, or got into trouble, but have the heart and desire for a chance to shine in the SEC and contend for the championship. Guy is not only creating better football players, he is creating leaders. He will definitely be a coach to watch in the next few upcoming seasons.  Which brings me to my final point

5.     Now is the time for the emergence of….THE BLACK QUARTERBACK

One of the first things I noticed about the game was that both teams had Black QBs. One of those teams was a SEC team. For so long the SEC has been a dominating, but pretty cut and dry conference. You have a fast big nigga to run the ball, you have tall fast niggas to catch the ball, and you have big mean niggas to hit the QB and all the other niggas, and you have a White QB who can sling it to stand in the pocket and “manage” the game (sorry to put it so blatantly and not politically correct, I could go in on how football resembles slavery at times but that’s a whole separate blog ). If the SEC wants to remain contenders in this new system and dominate the NCAA, they will need to get with the program, and they are starting to (I wish UGA would hurry up…they missed out when they had DJ Shockley). First it was Auburn with Cam and Marshall. LSU’s follow up for Mettenberger is Marietta Georgia’s own Anthony Jennings, a fast, spirited QB with lots of potential. Clemson had Taj Boyd, and FSU had EJ Manuel and of course Jamies. The time has finally come to put the Black man in the leadership position, and it only makes sense; seeing as the majority of football teams are predominantly Black. Now I’m not trying to make football a race thing, because the beauty of sports is that certain things don’t matter on the field, either you win or lose. BUT in my opinion, it has always seemed like the quarterback and head coach role were always saved for “good ole boys.” However, with the emergence of Michael Vick, then the success of guys like RGIII and Jameis Winston, the door is finally wide open for Black men to lead great football teams. That being said, when I say “Black QB” I’m really referring the new generation “dual-threat” quarter back. More and more we are seeing fewer star QBs in college be typical pocket passers (AJ McCarron and Mettenberger are good examples of some of the last ones). Johnny Manziel, Nick Marshall, and even Jameis (as seen in the BCS title game), can burn you with their legs. This is about to be a great time for football. We are currently watching football transform and be taken to the next level. Defensive coordinators are going to have to learn how to defend the QB’s run attack (we should start seeing more plays that implement a QB spy). Offenses are going to change and adapt their playbook. Football is about to become a lot more exciting. The Manning, Tom Brady, Brett Farve, glory days of football are coming to an end, those guys are getting old. Get ready for this next generation of QBs. They will truly be something to watch.
